Former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has expressed heartfelt appreciation to his campaign team, parliamentary supporters and party executives following his strong showing in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential primaries held on Saturday, January 31, 2026.
Speaking at his campaign’s collation centre ahead of the Electoral Commission’s official declaration of results, Dr Bawumia described the primary contest as intense and nationwide, crediting his success to the collective effort of his team.
“We’ve gone through a journey. It’s been a fierce battle that we’ve waged across the country, across all the regions, and we couldn’t have gotten here without the support of the team around you,” he said.
Dr Bawumia stressed the importance of teamwork in political contests, noting that leadership success is inseparable from the strength of those working behind the scenes.
“You’re only as good as your team in these matters, and I can say without any fear of contradiction that I have been blessed with an excellent team,” he added.
“Everybody has contributed so much, and I cannot really thank everybody individually at the moment, but I will have time to thank everybody,” he noted.
Dr Bawumia also commended Members of Parliament who backed his bid, describing their support as decisive.
“The MPs who have stood by my side have been phenomenal in this contest. They really supported and delivered what they promised to do,” he said.
He further extended his gratitude to party executives, electoral officials, security agencies and the media for their roles in organising a smooth and credible primary.
Reflecting on the party’s legacy, Dr Bawumia paid tribute to past NPP flagbearers, acknowledging the foundation they laid for the party’s current position.
“We are standing on very broad shoulders, former flag-bearers who have built the party and taken it this far,” he said, mentioning Professor Adu Boahen, J.A. Kufuor, and President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
Describing the moment as humbling, Dr Bawumia said he was honoured to be entrusted with the responsibility of continuing the party’s work.
“It’s really humbling that I have been elected as flag-bearer of the party to continue the work that they have started,” he stated.
He concluded by thanking former Members of Parliament and other supporters who contributed to his journey.
