Medikal Named Ambassador for NYA’s ‘Red Means Stop’ Anti-Drug Campaign

Award-winning Ghanaian rapper Medikal has been appointed as an ambassador for the National Youth Authority’s (NYA) “Red Means Stop” campaign, an initiative aimed at combating the growing use of the synthetic drug known as ‘red’ among young people.

The announcement was made in Parliament on Wednesday, February 25, 2026, by the Minister for Youth Development and Empowerment, Hon. George Opare Addo. According to the Minister, the decision to appoint the musician forms part of a broader strategy to amplify the campaign’s message and connect more effectively with Ghana’s youth.

“In a strategic move to enhance the campaign’s appeal and credibility among the youth, the National Youth Authority has appointed renowned Ghanaian musician, Medikal, as an official ‘Red Means Stop’ ambassador,” the Minister stated.

He explained that Medikal’s strong influence, particularly through his music and social media platforms, makes him well-positioned to champion the fight against substance abuse.

“Medikal’s significant influence among young Ghanaians… makes him an ideal advocate for substance-free living,” he added.

As ambassador, Medikal is expected to serve as a visible role model, promoting anti-drug messaging through his artistic work, public appearances and digital platforms. His involvement will include participating in school outreach programmes, incorporating the ‘Red Means Stop’ theme into music videos and performances, and engaging young people in conversations about the dangers of substance abuse.

The rapper will also support peer advocacy training and youth mobilisation efforts under the campaign.

Hon. Opare Addo further revealed that the NYA has developed a comprehensive roadmap to intensify interventions against what he described as the “worrying red trend” and the wider challenge of substance abuse.

“Building on the momentum generated by the research that the Ministry conducted, the campaign launch, strategic partnerships and celebrity ambassadorship, the National Youth Authority has developed a comprehensive roadmap for intensifying interventions,” he told Parliament.

A key component of the strategy is a nationwide billboard campaign designed to create high public visibility and awareness across all 16 regions of Ghana. The billboards will be placed at major highways and transport corridors, city centres and market areas, as well as school zones and other youth gathering points to reinforce the campaign’s message.

The ‘Red Means Stop’ campaign is part of ongoing national efforts to curb substance abuse and protect young people from the harmful effects of illicit drug use.
