NDC Didn’t Win We Gave Them Power”- Bawumia Claims on Thank You Tour

During his Thank You Tour in the Greater Accra Region on Monday, May 27, the NPP’s 2024 presidential candidate and former Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, made a bold statement regarding the outcome of the 2024 general elections. According to him, the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) did not win the election instead, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) handed power over to them by failing to turn out in full force.

Bawumia attributed the NPP’s defeat to voter apathy rather than a clear victory by the NDC.

“The NDC didn’t win, we gave them the power,” he said. “The problem is that we didn’t come out to vote. Our vote dropped by 2.1 million compared to 2020.”

He emphasized that the NPP’s lower voter turnout significantly affected the election results, making it easier for the NDC to secure power.

‘’If we had even 1.7 million votes, it would have been easy hands down,” he stressed.

Dr. Bawumia also revealed that six key regions in Ghana accounted for 84% of the 2.1 million NPP voters who did not show up at the polls. He particularly cited Greater Accra, where over 571,000 people reportedly failed to vote.

“By 1 pm, many polling stations were empty. Almost every constituency, from Axim to Zebilla, had low voter turnout,” he noted.

The former Vice President’s remarks underscore the internal challenges within the NPP and suggest a need for party reorganization and voter mobilization ahead of future elections
