Temporary Road Closures in Accra for State Funeral of Helicopter Crash Victims.

The Ghana Police Service has announced a series of temporary road closures and traffic diversions in Accra as part of preparations for the interdenominational and interfaith State Funeral for victims of the recent military helicopter crash. The ceremony, scheduled for Friday, August 15, 2025, at the Black Star Square, will bring together national leaders, religious figures, security agencies, and bereaved families for a moment of solemn remembrance.

In a statement, the Police explained that the closures are “to ensure public safety and smooth traffic management” during the high-profile event. Roads that will be closed to traffic include the 28th February Road from the CEPS Traffic Light Intersection to the Castle Road Junction, the Osu Cemetery Traffic Light on Lokko Street, Castle Road from the AU area to the Osu Cemetery Traffic Light, and Starlet 91 Road at the Ministries Traffic Light Intersection.

The diversions outlined will see motorists from La, Labone, and Osu on the 28th of February Road, towards the Central Business District and Ministries, redirected onto Salem Avenue Road at the Castle Traffic Light to link with Oxford Street. Those from Lokko Street heading towards Castle Road are advised to use Ajumaku Street and Oxford Street. Traffic from the John Evans Atta Mills High Street bound for Black Star Square will be diverted onto Liberia Road at the CEPS Traffic Intersection towards the National Theatre Traffic Light Intersection. Similarly, motorists from the AU Circle heading towards Castle Road via the Osu Cemetery Traffic Light will be redirected onto Abdul Diouf and King Hassan Roads to connect with Abdul Nasser Road near the Ghana Institute of Journalism (GIJ).

The Police Service is urging the public to take note of these changes and plan their movements. “We appeal to all road users to be patient, comply with the diversions, and support the arrangements to ensure a dignified atmosphere as the nation bids farewell to the fallen heroes,” the statement said.
