Attorney-General Directs EOCO to Investigate Joseph Yamin and Yakubu Abanga Over Illegal Mining Allegations

The Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Dr. Dominic Ayine, has instructed the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) to launch investigations into alleged illegal mining activities involving NDC’s organizer, Mr. Joseph Yamin, and third vice chairman, Mr. Yakubu Abanga.

This directive, dated July 15, 2025, comes in response to increasing public outcry and credible reports suggesting that the two individuals may be involved in unauthorized mining operations, widely known as galamsey. The Attorney-General’s letter cites violations of the Minerals and Mining Act, 2006 (Act 703), as amended, and expresses grave concern over the environmental and social impact of such activities.

Dr. Ayine noted that illegal mining continues to destroy forest reserves, pollute water bodies, and undermine sustainable livelihoods in affected communities. He emphasized that the government remains fully committed to enforcing the law and restoring integrity in Ghana’s natural resource management.

EOCO has been directed not only to interrogate the named individuals but also to extend its investigations to others who may be implicated. The agency has also been encouraged to consult the Prof. Frimpong-Boateng report on illegal mining as part of its inquiry.

Additionally, EOCO may request the assistance of the Chief Executive Officer of the Minerals Commission in the investigations, given the Commission’s regulatory oversight of the mining sector.
