Ghana’s senior women’s national team, the Black Queens, received a rousing welcome at the Kotoka International Airport on Monday, July 28, after clinching third place at the 2024 African Women’s Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
The Queens secured the bronze medal following a tense 4-3 penalty shootout victory over South Africa, after the third-place playoff ended in a 1-1 draw in regulation time. It marks Ghana’s first podium finish at the tournament since 2016, bringing an end to an eight-year medal drought.
Fans began gathering at the airport as early as 4:00 am, eager to celebrate the team’s achievement. Dressed in national colors and waving flags, supporters sang, danced, and cheered as the players arrived, creating a festive atmosphere that captured the nation’s pride.
This achievement is being hailed as a significant milestone in the team’s rebuilding journey under head coach Kim Lars. It has also reignited hope in the future of women’s football in Ghana.
As part of their reward, the Black Queens received $350,000 for their third-place finish. Present at the airport to welcome the team were officials from the Ghana Football Association, representatives from the Ministry of Sports and Recreation, as well as former national players who came to show their support and appreciation.
