Cabinet Approves Ghana’s Formal Application to Join BRICS – Hon. Ablakwa

Ghana has decided to formally apply to join BRICS as the government seeks to diversify the country’s international partnerships and strengthen its economic and geopolitical position.

Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa announced the decision, stating that President John Dramani Mahama’s Cabinet had approved it.

According to him, the decision is intended to deepen Ghana’s engagement with emerging economies and create more opportunities for cooperation within the Global South.

He said the government believes Ghana’s historical relations with India, a founding member of BRICS, could support its bid to join the bloc.

“The Mahama-led Cabinet believes that we must diversify,” the minister said, pointing to the longstanding cooperation between Ghana and India in the multilateral arena.

He added that joining BRICS would “give us economic options, diversify our base, our partnerships, and also allow us to have more cooperation within the Global South framework.”

Hon Ablakwa described the decision as “a very strategic decision” and disclosed that Ghana had formally sought India’s support for its application.

“We are quite pleased with the response we have received from Foreign Minister Dr Jaishankar,” he said.

The move forms part of the government’s broader effort to strengthen Ghana’s South-South cooperation while expanding its economic and diplomatic partnerships beyond traditional allies.
