The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has called on the Chief Justice to resign, accusing him of engaging in partisan politics following comments it said were made in a circulating video.
The party expressed concern over the Chief Justice’s remarks, which it said suggested that the current National Democratic Congress (NDC) government and its appointed Chief Executive Officers were performing better than the previous NPP administration.
“This is not the language of a Chief Justice. It is the language of a party propagandist, and it has no place whatsoever in the mouth of the head of Ghana’s Judiciary.”
The NPP argued that the comments undermine the independence and neutrality expected of the Judiciary, citing constitutional provisions that guarantee the Judiciary’s independence.
The party further accused the Chief Justice of becoming too closely associated with political appointees of the current government.
“He has presented himself not as the impartial head of an independent Judiciary but as a leading member of the National Democratic Congress in judicial robes.”
According to the NPP, the Chief Justice should resign and formally join the NDC if he wishes to engage in political commentary.
The party also raised concerns over what it described as the Chief Justice’s commitment to ensuring the success of President John Dramani Mahama’s agenda, questioning whether such a position was compatible with the expected impartiality of the head of the Judiciary.
The statement further referenced the government’s Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL) initiative, under which, it said, persons associated with the NPP are being pursued.
