The Electoral Commission (EC) has announced that a parliamentary by-election will be held in the Tamale Central Constituency on Tuesday, September 30, 2025, following the death of the sitting Member of Parliament, Hon. Murtala Muhammed Ibrahim.

In a press release signed by the Chairperson, Mrs. Jean Mensa, the Commission stated:

“Following the unfortunate death of the Member of Parliament for the Tamale Central Constituency, Hon. Murtala Muhammed Ibrahim, the seat of the Constituency in Parliament has become vacant. Following Article 112 (5) of the Constitution, as amended, the Electoral Commission will hold a By-Election in the Constituency on Tuesday, 30th September, 2025.”

The EC also announced it will accept nominations from September 8 to September 10, 2025, daily from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at its Tamale Metropolitan Office.

Nomination forms, according to the release, can be downloaded from the Commission’s website (www.ec.gov.gh) starting August 19, 2025, until the close of nominations on September 10, 2025.

“A prospective Candidate may personally deliver or cause to be delivered on his/her behalf, by either the Proposer or Seconder of his/her Nomination, the completed Nomination Forms to the Returning Officer,” the Commission noted.

The filing fee has been fixed at GHC10,000 per candidate, but the EC explained that female candidates and persons with disabilities (PWDs) will pay a reduced fee of GHC7,500.

Candidates are also required to submit two bust-sized photographs against a red background and ensure that their forms are endorsed by a proposer, a seconder, and 18 other registered voters in the constituency.

Concluding the release, the Commission urged stakeholders to take note of the timelines and requirements, stressing:

“We urge the public to be guided accordingly.” The Tamale Central by-election is expected to attract keen political interest, given the constituency’s history and its strategic importance in the Northern Region.
