The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, led by Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has officially announced the reopening of the Ghana Embassy in Washington, DC, on Thursday, May 29, 2025. This comes after a temporary shutdown to address serious administrative and operational concerns.
According to a statement released by the Ministry today, Tuesday, May 27, the decision to close the embassy earlier this year was necessary following the “recall of Home-Based Staff and the suspension of Local Staff” due to irregularities in the Embassy’s operations. The Ministry has since dispatched a new team of “seasoned diplomats led by an astute diplomat”to take over the mission, to restore credibility and efficiency.
To modernize and secure the Embassy’s operations, an Information Technology team has also been deployed to “reconfigure the website and payment platforms to do away with all unofficial and unauthorized links.” This is expected to streamline services and eliminate risks of fraudulent activity.
The Ministry acknowledged the inconvenience the closure may have caused but assured Ghanaians in the U.S. that systems are now in place to address the backlog. “Any inconvenience resulting from our necessary interventions is deeply regretted,” the statement noted.

In a show of transparency and accountability, the Ministry revealed that the “unfortunate circumstances which led to the closure of the Embassy have been brought to the attention of the Auditor-General and the Attorney-General… for further action and appropriate sanctions.”
Minister Ablakwa’s leadership has been praised for swiftly addressing the crisis and pushing for reforms. The Ministry reaffirmed its broader mission, stating: “We reaffirm our commitment to enhancing service delivery to the public, safeguarding transparency and accountability, and protecting Ghana’s esteemed image in the comity of nations.”
