The Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, has disclosed that Monday’s heavy rains in the Greater Accra Region displaced 7,761 households and affected 38,802 individuals, with 12 confirmed dead and seven people still missing.
He disclosed in Parliament on Tuesday, June 30, as he briefed lawmakers on the scale of destruction caused by the downpour that inundated several communities across the capital and disrupted both social and economic activities.
According to the Minister, the floods spread across 25 communities within 18 Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs), leaving widespread damage in their wake.
“We have a total of 7,761 households that were displaced, with 38,802 individuals affected.”
He also revealed that the heavy rains on Monday, June 29, alone produced 169.2 millimetres of rainfall within 24 hours, making it the fourth-highest daily rainfall recorded over the same period.
“Mr Speaker, by the time we got to the morning, we saw a volume that is the fourth highest that this country has ever seen since 1995. A volume of 169 millimetres of water in a day,” he noted.
He further confirmed that search efforts were still ongoing for seven individuals who remain missing following the disaster.
“Seven people as of this morning were missing, and the total deaths are 12 individuals that we lost,” he said.
The Minister used the opportunity to express the government’s condolences to families who lost loved ones, describing the moment as a difficult one for the country.
“Let me take this opportunity to extend our condolences and those of the government and the people of Ghana to the families that lost their family members, and we assure them we are with them in this difficult moment,” he stated.
He added that many affected residents were unable to sleep in their homes due to the severity of the flooding, assuring that the government is working to provide relief and support.
“We know many people could not be in their homes and even sleep in their homes, but the government is doing whatever it can,” he added.
