The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has dismissed as fake a widely circulated notice claiming that African nationals living in Cambodia had been ordered to leave the country by May 31, 2026 or face arrest, imprisonment and financial penalties.
In a statement issued on Friday, May 29, the Ministry said the document, which has been shared across social and traditional media platforms, falsely claimed that citizens of Ghana, Kenya, Cameroon, Uganda and other African countries were being targeted under new immigration measures introduced by Cambodian authorities.
According to the Ministry, diplomatic engagements with Cambodian authorities confirmed that the notice “is absolutely fake and was not issued by any state institution in Cambodia.”
The Ministry further revealed that the General Department of Immigration under Cambodia’s Ministry of Interior had issued an official clarification describing the viral document as “completely untrue.”
“The general public and the Ghanaian media are, therefore, advised to disregard the discredited document and avoid sharing unverified information capable of creating unnecessary fear and anxiety among affected persons and their families,” the statement said.
Despite dismissing the deportation claims, the Ministry acknowledged that some Ghanaians resident in Cambodia had previously expressed interest in voluntarily returning home.
It disclosed that the Government of Ghana, through its High Commission in Malaysia which oversees Cambodia, had already facilitated the evacuation of 85 Ghanaian nationals between March and May 2026.
The Ministry added that arrangements are currently underway to support the return of an additional 76 Ghanaians still in Cambodia who have also requested assistance.
“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is working in conjunction with competent authorities in Cambodia to ensure the safe return of these Ghanaians. We commend the Government of the Kingdom of Cambodia for its impressive cooperation,” the statement noted.
The government also reiterated its commitment to protecting the welfare and interests of Ghanaian citizens abroad and urged the public to rely only on verified official information concerning Ghanaian nationals overseas.
