GAF Confirms Missing Helicopter After Reported Crash in Ashanti Region.

The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) have confirmed that one of their helicopters, a Z-9 model, went missing after taking off from Accra on Wednesday, August 6, 2025. The aircraft was en route to Obuasi when it lost contact with radar systems, prompting urgent search and rescue efforts.

In a press release issued hours after the disappearance, GAF stated:

“A GAF helicopter, Z9, that took off this morning at 0912hrs from Accra and heading for Obuasi is currently off the radar. All efforts are being made to establish contact. On board were 3 crew and 5 passengers.”

The official statement came shortly after reports emerged that a military helicopter had crashed near Adansi Akrofuom in the Ashanti Region. Eyewitnesses from nearby Adansi Brofoyedu claim the helicopter caught fire upon impact and was “burned beyond recognition.”

Locals say the crash occurred in the mid-morning, and the intensity of the flames made it nearly impossible to approach the wreckage. Emergency services were later deployed to the scene, while military officials began their investigations.

Though the identities of the victims have not been confirmed, initial observations suggest that multiple fatalities occurred. The helicopter was reportedly operating a routine Wednesday flight from Accra to Obuasi, a route it frequently plied.

Authorities are yet to establish the exact cause of the crash, but investigations are ongoing, with weather conditions and mechanical failure among the possibilities being considered.
