Gizella Tetteh Agbotui Urges DVLA to Introduce Instalment Payments for Driver’s Licences

The Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya West, Hon Gizella Tetteh Agbotui, has urged the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) to allow applicants to pay for their driving licences in instalments to make the process more affordable.

Speaking on October 28 at the commissioning of a new DVLA operational centre, the MP said the cost of obtaining a licence could be a financial burden for young people, commercial motor riders and low-income earners.

She noted that requiring applicants to pay the full amount at once could discourage some from completing the licensing process, potentially leaving them to drive without valid licences.

According to her, an instalment payment system could encourage more people to undergo the required training and testing before taking to the road. She added that the proposal could also improve compliance with licensing regulations and increase the DVLA’s internally generated revenue.

Hon Tetteh Agbotui stressed that the Authority’s role should extend beyond issuing licences to ensuring that drivers understand road signs, practise defensive driving and recognise their responsibilities towards other road users.

She said improving access to driver licensing, alongside stronger road safety education, would help protect lives and support economic activities.

The MP expressed hope that the DVLA would consider the proposal as part of efforts to make obtaining a valid driving licence more accessible while promoting compliance with road traffic regulations.
