Government Declares Wednesdays as National Fugu Day

The Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts has announced a new national initiative encouraging Ghanaians to dedicate every Wednesday to wearing Fugu, also known as Batakari, as part of efforts to promote and preserve the country’s rich cultural heritage.

In a press release dated February 10 and signed by the Minister for Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Hon Abla Dzifa Gomashie, the Ministry said the decision was taken “on behalf of the Government and the good people of Ghana” as a step toward strengthening national identity and celebrating Ghana’s traditional craftsmanship.

The statement explained that all Ghanaians, as well as friends of Ghana both at home and abroad, are being encouraged to wear Fugu “in all its diverse forms, designs, and expressions, complemented by its distinctive and beautiful accessories” every Wednesday.

According to the Ministry, the initiative goes beyond fashion. It is aimed at deepening cultural awareness and projecting Ghana’s heritage to the global community with pride. “This initiative is intended to deepen national cultural awareness, affirm our identity, and project Ghana’s heritage with pride to the world,” the release stated.

The government also highlighted the expected economic benefits of the move. It noted that a nationwide embrace of Fugu would empower local weavers, designers, artisans, and traders across the value chain. The initiative is anticipated to create expanded business, employment, and commercial opportunities across the country.

Officials believe that setting aside Wednesdays for Fugu will not only boost the creative arts industry but also serve as a unifying national symbol. The government expressed hope that the collective participation in the initiative “will strengthen national unity, stimulate the creative economy, and serve as a powerful symbol of Ghana’s cultural confidence and self-expression.”

The Ministry is urging broad public support to ensure the success of the initiative and to reinforce Ghana’s commitment to celebrating its indigenous traditions.
