The Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) has launched an investigation into the cause of a nationwide power system disturbance that disrupted electricity supply across parts of the country in the early hours of Wednesday, July 29.
The company said the incident occurred at approximately 3:11 a.m., when the National Interconnected Transmission System experienced a disturbance that caused several power generation plants to trip simultaneously, resulting in widespread outages.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, GRIDCo explained that the unexpected system event affected electricity transmission, leading to interruptions in power supply.
“The disturbance resulted in the simultaneous tripping of some generating plants across the national power system, leading to interruption of electricity supply,” the statement said.
GRIDCo noted that its engineers and system operators immediately activated established restoration procedures and are working closely with other power sector institutions to restore electricity to affected areas.
The company assured the public that every effort is being made to return power as quickly as possible while maintaining the safety and stability of the national grid.
“Our engineers and system operators are working continuously, in close collaboration with power sector stakeholders to restore power within the shortest time possible without compromising safety,” GRIDCo stated.
As restoration efforts continue, the company said a comprehensive technical investigation is underway to establish the precise cause of the disturbance and prevent similar incidents in the future.
GRIDCo also expressed regret over the inconvenience caused by the outage, assuring customers that updates would be provided as more information becomes available.
“We sincerely apologise for the inconvenience and appreciate the patience and understanding of the public during this period,” the company said.
