Deputy Minority Leader and Member of Parliament for Asokwa, Patricia Appiagyei, has returned an alleged GH¢70,000 payment linked to the work of Parliament’s Appointments Committee, saying she does not know its source.
In an alleged memorandum dated September 2, 2026, and addressed to Minority Chief Whip and Nsawam-Adoagyiri MP, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, Mrs Appiagyei said the alleged GH¢70,000 had been presented to her as an advance from the Majority Chief Whip.
However, she said she was uncomfortable keeping the money because she did not know its source. According to the memo,
“My first reason is the fact that I do not want to enjoy any financial benefit under any circumstances to vet our own colleagues in leadership from the other side,” she said, referring to the vetting of Mahama Ayariga and Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings.
Hon Appiagyei also cited the Minority’s protest and decision not to participate in the vetting of three nominees to the Supreme Court: Justices Sophia Rosetta Oduokuwa, Bernasko Essah, Edward Amoako Asante, and Anthony Forson Jnr.
According to the alleged memo, her acceptance of the payment would be inconsistent with the Minority Caucus’ position and the principles behind its non-participation in the vetting process.
The statement further stated that she did not intend to receive any financial benefit in connection with the vetting of the nominees.
“In support of the Minority Leader’s decision to return his share of the amount sent to him in that respect, I humbly return the amount of seventy thousand cedis,” the statement stated.
The statement concluded that Mrs Appiagyei asked that the alleged GH¢70,000 be returned to the Majority Chief Whip, while reaffirming her commitment to the position taken by the Minority Caucus.
