“I Will Resign If I’m Against It” — Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga Speaks on Mahama Third-Term Rumours

Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga has addressed growing rumours surrounding President John Mahama’s alleged third-term agenda, making it clear that he will not support any party position with which he personally disagrees.

Speaking on the AM Show on Joy News on Wednesday, December 10, Ayariga clarified both his stance and what he believes is the opposition’s role in fueling the speculation.

According to him, the Minority Caucus is intentionally creating fear and confusion among the public. “I think that the minority are rather trying to incite people to end up wanting to do something that they have clearly said they are not thinking about now,” he stated, dismissing claims that the President has any current intention of seeking a third term.

When questioned further about whether he would support such a move if the party decided to pursue it, Ayariga remained steadfast in his principles. He stated that political leadership requires adherence to party decisions, but only when those decisions align with one’s conscience and reasoning.

“If my party decides that it is something that they want to pursue and I become convinced in my position as leader of government business, I will be obliged to pursue it,” he said. However, he stressed that if he strongly disagrees and fails to persuade the party otherwise, he will not remain in a role that forces him to act against his beliefs.

“If I don’t accept, then I have to resign,” he emphasised. “If I’m against it, I will resign.”

Mahama Ayariga’s clear declaration adds a new dimension to the debate. While the Majority maintains that there is no active plan for a third-term bid, the Minority continues to raise the issue as a matter of national concern. For now, Ayariga’s stance appears to be a message to both sides that he will follow the party when it aligns with his values, but he won’t compromise his integrity for political convenience.
