Iñaki Williams has announced his retirement from international football, ending his four-year career with the Ghana Black Stars.
The 32-year-old Athletic Bilbao forward announced his decision in a statement, saying, “I feel the time has come to bring my journey with the Ghana national team to an end.”
Williams was born in Bilbao to Ghanaian parents and previously represented Spain once in a friendly against Bosnia and Herzegovina in 2016. He later switched his international allegiance and officially chose to represent Ghana in July 2022.
He was part of Ghana’s squad at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Côte d’Ivoire and the 2026 World Cup.
Reflecting on his time with the Black Stars, Williams said he was leaving with pride, knowing he had given his best whenever he represented the country.
“I leave happy, proud and with the peace of mind of knowing that I gave everything every time I wore this shirt,” he said.
Williams also said representing Ghana brought him closer to his roots and gave him a strong sense of pride.
“Ghana has given me much more than football. It has allowed me to come back home, feel even closer to my roots and experience the enormous pride of representing my country,” he said.
He thanked Ghanaians and everyone who supported him throughout his international career, adding that he would continue to support the Black Stars.
“Ghana will always be a part of me. I will continue supporting the Black Stars as one of you, wherever I am,” Williams said.
