Nigerian Boxer Collapses and Dies After Ghana Pro League Fight

Nigerian light-heavyweight boxer Gabriel Oluwaseun Olanrewaju, known in the ring as “Success,” has tragically passed away after collapsing during his fight against Ghanaian-Nigerian boxer Jonathan Mbanugu at the Bukom Boxing Arena in Accra.

The highly anticipated bout took place on Saturday, March 29, as part of the Bel 7 Star Professional Boxing League. The fight, scheduled for eight rounds, took an unexpected turn when Olanrewaju suddenly collapsed in the ring, leaving fans and officials in shock.

During the final moments of the fight, Olanrewaju landed two weak punches before Mbanugu countered with a strong right hand to his face. Immediately after, Olanrewaju staggered backward, fell against the ropes, and collapsed, causing concern among spectators. The referee initiated the mandatory count, but the situation quickly turned alarming as Olanrewaju lay motionless, his throat resting against the ropes.

Realizing the severity of the situation, Olanrewaju’s corner team rushed into the ring, placed him on the canvas, and removed his gum shield while trying to revive him. The on-site medical team acted swiftly, transporting him to the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital for emergency treatment. Sadly, he was later pronounced dead.

The news of Gabriel Olanrewaju’s untimely passing has deeply affected the boxing fraternity, with many mourning the loss of a promising fighter. His tragic death raises concerns about safety measures in the sport and the risks that boxers face in pursuit of their careers.
