President Mahama Announces 24-Hour Operations at Tema and Takoradi Ports

President John Dramani Mahama has announced a major milestone in his government’s ambitious 24-Hour Economy Policy, confirming that the Tema and Takoradi Ports will soon operate around the clock to support Ghana’s growing export and logistics sectors.

Speaking at the 2025 Horticulture Expo, President Mahama described the 24-hour economy as a “game-changing strategy” aimed at unlocking Ghana’s full productive capacity. According to him, the policy will officially commence on July 1st, 2025.

“We’re also implementing a game-changing strategy, the 24-hour economy initiative, to unlock Ghana’s productive potential across all sectors,” the President stated. “I’m pleased to announce that on July 1st, the 24-hour initiative policy will be ready to go into operation.”

The 24-hour port operations, particularly at Tema and Takoradi, are expected to provide a critical boost to Ghana’s horticulture industry by ensuring the rapid movement of perishable goods from farms to international markets.

“It allows perishable goods like pineapples, mangoes, chillies, and herbs to move swiftly from the field to ports, to international shelves, minimising losses and maximising value,” President Mahama explained.

He also highlighted the collaborative efforts among key government institutions to make this policy a success. “The Ministry of Trade and Agribusiness and Industry, and the Ministry of Transport are working together with the Ghana Revenue Authority, the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority, the Ghana Shippers Council, and other stakeholders to soon declare the Tema and Takoradi ports as 24-hour ports,” he added.

The full implementation of the 24-hour economy policy is expected to significantly enhance Ghana’s competitiveness in international trade, create thousands of jobs, and stimulate economic growth across various sectors
