Prez Mahama Orders Immediate Release of GH¢300 Million for Flood Relief and Prevention

President John Dramani Mahama has directed the immediate release of GH¢300 million from the Contingency Fund to support emergency flood relief and mitigation efforts following severe flooding that hit parts of Accra and other communities in southern Ghana on Monday, June 29.

The directive, announced in a statement issued by the Minister for Government Communications and Presidential Spokesperson, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, on Tuesday, June 30, comes as the government moves to respond to widespread destruction caused by hours of unusually heavy rainfall.

According to the statement, “the President has directed the Minister for Finance to release GHS 300 million from the Contingency Fund to finance urgent flood relief and mitigation efforts.”

Half of the amount, GH¢150 million, has been allocated for immediate relief support to affected individuals and communities, while the remaining GH¢150 million will be used for flood mitigation interventions aimed at reducing future incidents.

“The directive forms part of the government’s response to the flooding of parts of Accra and other communities in the southern sector of the country after hours of unusually heavy rainfall,” the statement added.

The government further explained that the dual allocation is intended not only to provide urgent humanitarian assistance but also to address underlying factors contributing to recurrent flooding in affected areas.

As part of the emergency response, the President has also ordered the deployment of personnel from the Ghana Armed Forces and the Ghana Police Service to support the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) and other security agencies in ongoing rescue and relief operations across the city.

The statement noted that “another GHS 150 million will be spent on flood mitigation measures aimed at reducing incidents of flooding.”

On Monday, President Mahama undertook an aerial tour of flood-hit communities to assess the scale of destruction and coordinate immediate interventions.

During the visit, he announced a series of measures aimed at safeguarding residents and preventing further flooding, as emergency teams continue recovery and relief efforts in affected areas.
