Spain crowned FIFA World Cup champions once again after Ferran Torres scored a dramatic extra-time winner to seal a 1-0 victory over defending champions Argentina in Sunday’s final at New York New Jersey Stadium.
After a tense and closely contested 90 minutes ended goalless, the breakthrough finally came in the 106th minute when Torres found the back of the net, handing La Roja their second World Cup crown and their first since lifting the trophy in 2010.
Spain dominated large spells of the final, controlling possession and creating the better scoring opportunities. However, Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez delivered an outstanding performance, making several crucial saves to keep the defending champions in the contest and force the match into extra time.
Argentina struggled to create clear-cut chances throughout the game, and their hopes of mounting a late comeback were dealt a further blow when Enzo Fernández was sent off late in extra time, leaving the South Americans to finish the match with 10 men.
The victory capped an impressive World Cup campaign for Spain, who had already underlined their title credentials by defeating France in the semi-finals before overcoming Argentina on football’s biggest stage.
The final also carried symbolic significance as Spain’s youthful side brought an end to Argentina’s reign as world champions, denying Lionel Messi the chance to conclude his illustrious international career with a second World Cup title.
Beyond the famous FIFA World Cup trophy, Spain’s triumph also earned the squad a unique prize. FIFA introduced championship rings in the tournament’s history, with each ring valued at approximately $12,000. Crafted from 18-carat gold and set with 89 diamonds and 36 sapphires, the bespoke rings will be presented to Spain’s players and coaching staff. FIFA will also produce 1,996 commemorative rings for fans worldwide, marking the beginning of a new tradition inspired by American sports.
Spain’s victory secures its place among football’s elite once again, ending a 16-year wait to reclaim the sport’s biggest prize.
