Award-winning Ghanaian musicians Stonebwoy and Sarkodiehave engaged in a heated exchange on X, with both artists offering different perspectives on professional relationships, personal principles and how musicians respond to disagreements within the industry.
The dispute appears to have been triggered by a post from Sarkodie, which Stonebwoy interpreted as an indirect message aimed at him.
Stonebwoy, in a lengthy post, referenced a series of private conversations between the two artists, including a call following Sarkodie’s RAH show in the United Kingdom and another conversation that lasted more than an hour after Stonebwoy posted what he described as a “factual tweet.”
According to Stonebwoy, their discussions touched on the music industry, artists’ behaviour and differing perspectives on principles.
He claimed Sarkodie had expressed the view that artists could not be “forced” to uphold particular principles and suggested that musicians ultimately make decisions based on what matters to them.
Stonebwoy argued that, based on two videos and Sarkodie’s subsequent post, the rapper’s position should be considered in the broader context of their conversations.
He concluded by stating that “without principle, advice is an opinion.”
Sarkodie, however, rejected Stonebwoy’s characterisation of their conversation, insisting that he never said artists should “play along so far as it benefits them.”
He questioned why Stonebwoy had connected his social media post to himself and said that if Stonebwoy felt targeted by the post, it raised questions about how he viewed their broader relationship.
Sarkodie also maintained that he had never intentionally made a social media post to shade Stonebwoy and said he generally does not engage with interpretations created by fans.
“I’m only responding to this because it’s coming directly from you,” Sarkodie stated.
The rapper further explained that he does not take matters in the music industry personally, particularly when there are more serious issues in his life to deal with.
He acknowledged that people have different approaches to conflict, noting that while there are situations he is willing to let slide, there are others he feels compelled to respond to.
Sarkodie also pointed to their history, arguing that if he genuinely had a problem with Stonebwoy, he would not have personally called him or invited him to perform at his RAH show.
He added that Stonebwoy associates with people who have allegedly disrespected him, but said he would not automatically interpret those relationships as support for such behaviour.
Sarkodie accused Stonebwoy of expecting an obligation from him that, in his view, does not exist.
The rapper also said this was not the first time Stonebwoy had expressed similar concerns, claiming that he had repeatedly approached him privately to discuss them and had continued to support and publicly celebrate Stonebwoy’s achievements despite their differences.
Sarkodie ended his response on a more personal note, telling Stonebwoy that he did not need to associate with him if he did not want to.
The exchange has since drawn attention from Ghana’s music community, with fans dissecting the statements and attempting to determine the issues underlying the disagreement.
While neither artist has explicitly declared an end to their relationship, their public exchange has exposed differences in how the two award-winning musicians view principles, personal boundaries and relationships within Ghana’s music industry.
