President John Dramani Mahama has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic passing of eight Ghanaian heroes, describing their loss as one the nation will never fully comprehend. Speaking during an interdenominational state funeral on Friday, August 15, 2025, the President said he prays the solemn occasion will bring some closure to a heartbroken country.
“I pray that this funeral will bring closure to a grieving nation and that the new dawn will break in which we can look forward with pride as Ghanaians to a prosperous nation,” he said. “We pray that this will be the beginning as the Almighty God heals our land.”
While acknowledging that the grief will linger, President Mahama stressed that the memories and legacies of the fallen must be preserved. “Individually and collectively, our nation will continue to mourn as we find ways to hold tightly the memories of these men and to honour their legacies,” he noted.
He emphasised that no amount of technical explanations or official investigations can truly ease the pain of such a loss. “There is no making sense of what happened. Despite whatever technical reasons or official explanations and investigation will yield, a loss of this magnitude and in this manner will never make sense to the grieving heart.”
In his tribute, the President called on Ghanaians to turn their grief into a force for unity, peace, and progress. “What we can do, each of us in our way, as we try to come to terms with this tragic loss, is to move in the direction of peace within our communities and families, having been reminded of how fragile life can be. Also, we can embrace the vision we shared with our fallen brothers for a stronger and more prosperous homeland.”
He further urged the nation to ensure the dependents of the departed are not left behind in the wake of this tragedy. “What we can do together as a nation is make sure that the lives of those who remain, specifically the children of our eight brothers, do not become the collateral damage of this tragedy,” he said.
The solemn ceremony drew dignitaries, military officials, families, and citizens who gathered to honour the lives and sacrifices of the eight, whose service and dedication will be remembered for generations.
