What Were We Doing? – Chief Justice Questions Ghana’s Past 8 Years as He Praises SSNIT’s Turnaround

Chief Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie has questioned Ghana’s development over the past eight years, saying recent improvements in the management of state institutions have left him wondering what the country had been doing during that period.

Speaking during a visit to the Minerals Income Investment Fund (MIIF), Justice Baffoe-Bonnie praised the fund’s performance, attributing its success to proper management, prudent use of resources and a focus on public service.

He said his visit to the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) had further deepened his concerns, particularly when compared with the period when the state pension fund considered selling some of its assets, including the Labadi Beach Hotel.

“The kind of things that we heard, if you compare that to the fact that not too long ago, SSNIT was preparing to sell its prized assets like Labadi, you wonder how Ghana could have sunk so low,” he said.

Justice Baffoe-Bonnie said the recent developments had caused him and others to ask, “What really have we been doing in the past eight years?”

The Chief Justice also urged state officials to focus on the legacy they leave behind, stressing that public office is not about personal gain but service to the people.

He encouraged the management of MIIF to sustain the practices that have contributed to the fund’s success and work towards supporting the government’s development agenda.
