A tragic building collapse at Accra New Town has claimed the lives of three people, with 20 others currently receiving medical treatment, Interior Minister Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak has confirmed.
The incident occurred on Sunday at an uncompleted three-storey structure located within the premises of the Accra New Town Experimental Basic School. The building, which was also being used as a place of worship by a Christian congregation, gave way during activities, trapping several individuals beneath the debris.
Initial reports suggested two fatalities, but updated figures released after thorough verification now place the death toll at three.
Rescue operations continued late into the night, with emergency teams working under floodlights in a desperate effort to reach those trapped. Personnel from the Ghana Police Service, Ghana National Fire Service, the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), and the National Ambulance Service were all deployed to the scene.
Speaking to the media, the Interior Minister emphasised the importance of accuracy in reporting casualty figures, noting that authorities took deliberate steps to confirm details before making them public.
“So far, information has been cross-checked and verified across hospitals to ensure we do not put out anything inaccurate,” he stated.
He also commended the swift response of emergency teams and expressed gratitude to all agencies involved, as well as members of the public and the media for their support.
Providing further details, the Minister revealed that a total of 23 people were affected by the collapse. Among the deceased are one male and two females, whose identities are yet to be officially confirmed.
“What we can say is that there was a total of 23 people. Unfortunately, we’ve lost one male and two females. They’re not able to tell names for now,” he disclosed.
The injured victims have since been transported to various health facilities across Accra, where they are receiving treatment.
