Senegal Beats Host Nation Morocco to Win 2025 AFCON Title

Senegal were crowned champions of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations after edging host nation Morocco 1–0 in a dramatic extra-time final that will be remembered as much for its controversy as for its quality.

The highly anticipated final, played before a packed and passionate crowd, was tense and evenly balanced throughout regulation time, with both sides battling for control but failing to break the deadlock. However, the match took a dramatic turn late in injury time when the referee awarded Morocco a controversial penalty. This decision sparked outrage among both the Senegalese players and fans.

Several Senegal players, visibly incensed by what many perceived as a soft foul in the penalty area, briefly walked off the pitch in protest, forcing officials to halt play as they worked to restore calm. The tension spilt into the stands, where scuffles broke out among supporters, prompting swift intervention from security personnel.

After the order was restored, Morocco was given the chance to seize the moment from the spot. But under intense pressure, penalty taker Brahim Díaz failed to convert, missing the opportunity to send the match in a different direction and keeping Senegal’s hopes alive as the game moved into extra time.

With emotions running high and fatigue setting in, Senegal found the decisive breakthrough in the 108th minute. Pape Gueye emerged as the hero of the night, timing his run perfectly to latch onto a precise through-ball before calmly slotting the ball past the Moroccan goalkeeper, sending the Senegal bench and supporters into jubilation.

The goal proved decisive, as Senegal held firm for the remainder of extra time to secure a memorable victory on hostile ground.

This triumph marks Senegal’s second Africa Cup of Nations title, following their historic win in 2021, and further cements their status as one of Africa’s dominant footballing nations. For Morocco, the defeat was a bitter end to a tournament in which they had hoped to lift the trophy on home soil.
