No Ban on the Use of AirPods or Earphones While Driving – Ghana Police

The Ghana Police Service has moved to clarify a viral flyer circulating on social media that claims motorists and motorcyclists are prohibited by law from using AirPods, earphones and other audio devices while driving or riding.

In a statement posted on Facebook on Tuesday, August 18, the Police Service said the flyer was not issued or authorised by the Service and urged the public to disregard it.

“The Service wishes to clarify that the flyer is not a communication of the Ghana Police Service,” the statement said.

According to the Police, neither the flyer nor its contents were officially released by the Service. The Cybercrime Unit has consequently begun efforts to trace the individuals behind the publication.

The Police, however, used the opportunity to caution road users about the broader dangers of distractions while driving or riding.

It noted that “any activity or device that distracts them or compromises their attention, hearing, control of the vehicle or awareness of surrounding traffic can pose a serious risk to road safety.”

The Service therefore urged motorists and riders to avoid distractions and remain fully attentive while using the road.

The Police also reminded road users to familiarise themselves with and comply with the Road Traffic Regulations, 2026 (L.I. 2519), as well as other applicable road traffic laws.

“Compliance with these regulations is essential to reducing road crashes and protecting lives,” the Service said.

The Police further encouraged the public to rely on its official communication channels for accurate information on road traffic regulations and other public safety matters.

While distancing itself from the viral flyer, the Service stressed that it remains committed to enforcing road traffic laws fairly and professionally and working with stakeholders to improve safety on Ghana’s roads.
