Ghana’s unbeaten run at the 2026 FIFA World Cup came to an end on Saturday night following a 2-1 defeat to Croatia, but the Black Stars still achieved their main objective of securing a place in the Round of 32.
With qualification already confirmed before kickoff, Ghana entered the final Group L match knowing that results had guaranteed their progression to the knockout stage. Their four points from the opening two matches were enough to book a spot in the next round under FIFA’s expanded World Cup format.
Croatia, needing a positive result to keep their tournament hopes alive, started the game with greater urgency and were rewarded before halftime. Petar Sučić broke the deadlock after being set up by Mateo Kovačić, giving the Europeans a deserved 1-0 lead at the interval.
The Black Stars struggled to find their rhythm in the opening half but returned from the break with renewed determination as they searched for an equaliser.
Their efforts paid off in the 73rd minute when Derrick Luckassen rose to meet a delivery from Ernest Nuamah and headed home to level the score at 1-1.
However, Croatia responded strongly and restored its lead 10 minutes later. Veteran captain Luka Modrić produced a precise pass to Nikola Vlašić, who made no mistake with the finish to put Croatia back in front.
Despite pushing for another equaliser in the closing stages, Ghana were unable to find a way through as Croatia held on for the victory.
While the defeat brings Ghana’s unbeaten group-stage run to an end, the black stars take comfort in having already secured qualification for the Round of 32, where they will now shift their focus to the knockout phase of the tournament.
