“I’m Not Making Music for Awards” – King Promise

Reigning Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMA) Artiste of the Year, King Promise, has made it clear that his approach to music is rooted in authenticity, not the pursuit of accolades.

In an interview on 3Lounge on 3FM alongside Nigerian star Mr Eazi, the award-winning singer addressed questions about his relatively low output following his major TGMA win. Contrary to speculation, he insists his decisions are not driven by strategy or pressure to maintain award-winning status.

“I am not making music for awards. I cherish the awards, but I will not be pressured into making music,” he said, emphasising that his artistry must come from a genuine place.

The “Terminator” hitmaker explained that his limited presence in multiple award categories this year was simply a reflection of the few projects he officially released during the period under review. According to him, his collaboration with Mr Eazi, “See What We’ve Done,” was the only submission he made, earning a nomination in the Afropop Song of the Year category. Additionally, his feature on “No Issues” with Lasmid secured a nomination for Best Afrobeat Song of the Year.

Addressing whether his reduced output was a calculated move after winning Artiste of the Year, King Promise dismissed the idea outright. For him, music cannot be forced or overly planned.

“Music can’t be overly calculated. It has to come from somewhere that’s really special,” he explained. “It’s not because I have won this that I have to go and make music just to win again.”

Despite his laid-back approach to chasing awards, the singer remains confident in his craft and what lies ahead. When asked if he would be content never winning Artist of the Year again, his response hinted at both humility and belief in his artistry.

“I don’t think that would be the case,” he said with a smile, before adding with certainty, “Oh, 10,000%,” when asked if he believes he can win it again.
