Several parts of Ghana experienced power outages early Thursday after a major fault developed on the Akosombo–Volta transmission line, affecting the stability of the national power system.
The Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) said the incident occurred at about 4:30 a.m. on Thursday, August 20, 2026.
According to GRIDCo in a press statement, the fault triggered the automatic shutdown of the Akosombo generating units and some thermal power plants. The shutdown was activated by the system’s protection mechanisms to safeguard the stability and integrity of the National Interconnected Transmission System.
The development resulted in power supply being interrupted in parts of the country.
GRIDCo said its engineers, working with other power sector agencies, immediately moved to isolate the affected transmission line and began the safe and systematic restoration of electricity supply.
The company said power had already been restored to some affected areas, while restoration efforts were continuing to reconnect all remaining customers as quickly and safely as possible.
GRIDCo apologised for the inconvenience caused by the outage and assured the public that its technical teams had been fully mobilised to complete the restoration process.
The company said it would continue to provide updates as more information becomes available and urged the public to remain patient and cooperate with the ongoing restoration efforts.
