Ghana’s goalkeepers coach Dan Gasper says Lawrence Ati-Zigi is showing positive signs in his recovery from the groin injury he picked up during the Black Stars’ opening 2026 FIFA World Cup match against Panama, but a final decision on his availability for Tuesday’s Group L clash with England will be made closer to kick-off.
Ati-Zigi was forced off in Ghana’s narrow 1-0 victory over Panama, raising early concerns over his fitness ahead of one of the team’s most important fixtures in Boston.
Speaking to GFA Media, Gasper stressed that the goalkeeper’s condition is being carefully managed on a daily basis, with both medical staff and head coach Carlos Queiroz involved in the decision-making process.
“Our goalkeepers are prepared for all the conditions that they’re going to be exposed to against England,” Gasper said. “We’re extremely happy with this progress. It’s day by day.”
He added that the situation remains fluid and will only be resolved when the technical and medical teams are fully satisfied.
“Obviously, this is a medical issue. It’s an issue he also collaborated with head coach Carlos Queiroz on, and so we’re taking it session by session,” he explained.
While Ati-Zigi’s recovery is encouraging, Gasper made it clear that Ghana will not take any risks with player fitness ahead of the crucial encounter.
“We’re optimistic about his progress. But the decision will be made at the right time at the right moment,” he said. “One thing for sure: we always stress that it’s team above individual. So any decision that we make is in the best interest of the team.”
Despite the uncertainty, Gasper expressed pride in being part of the Black Stars setup as they prepare for another key test on the world stage.
