Ghana’s FIFA World Cup campaign came to an end on Saturday after a 1-0 defeat to Colombia in the Round of 32 at Kansas City Stadium.
Jhon Arias scored the decisive goal in the 14th minute, finishing calmly from a Luis Suárez cross to send the South Americans into the Round of 16. Colombia will now face Switzerland for a place in the quarter-finals.
The Black Stars suffered an early setback when defender Marvin Senaya was forced off injured after just 13 minutes and replaced by Alidu Seidu. Moments later, Colombia took advantage of a defensive lapse, with Arias timing his run perfectly before guiding the ball beyond goalkeeper Lawrence Ati-Zigi.
Colombia dominated possession for much of the first half and repeatedly forced Ghana onto the back foot. The Black Stars struggled to settle into the game as the South Americans pressed aggressively and controlled the midfield.
Just before halftime, Colombia nearly doubled their advantage when Johan Mojica rose highest to meet a cross with a powerful header. Ati-Zigi, however, produced an outstanding reflex save to keep Ghana within touching distance at the break.
Ghana returned for the second half with greater urgency and pushed forward in search of an equaliser. Despite enjoying more possession than in the opening period, the Black Stars found it difficult to break through Colombia’s disciplined defensive structure.
The match became increasingly physical after the interval, with both sides picking up yellow cards. Ghana continued to search for a breakthrough, but Colombia managed the game effectively and limited the Black Stars to few clear opportunities.
In the end, Ghana failed to register a shot on target throughout the game, highlighting the strength of Colombia’s defensive display.
The defeat ends Ghana’s World Cup journey after the Black Stars progressed to the knockout stage as one of the tournament’s best third-placed teams, while Colombia march on to the Round of 16 with their hopes of a deep run still alive.
