Minister for Sports and Recreation Hon Kofi Adams has confirmed that players of Ghana’s senior national football team, the Black Stars, will receive an appearance fee of $100,000 each for participating in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Speaking on Hot Issues on TV3, the minister said the amount remains unchanged despite variations in appearance fees paid to players at previous World Cup tournaments.
“The appearance fee for the Black Stars players has been pegged at $100,000 per player,” Hon Adams said.
He explained that the appearance fee has fluctuated over the years, noting that players received between $50,000 and $80,000 during Ghana’s first World Cup appearance in 2006 before the amount increased to $120,000 at one point.
“It went up to 120 at a point and came back to 100. It has been pegged at 100 for quite some time. So this year, it’s the same thing. We haven’t changed it,” he stated.
The minister also said preparations for the tournament are progressing as planned, with the technical team expected to trim its provisional squad from 28 players to the required 26.
“We are ready on all fronts for the World Cup. The coach will have to drop two players from the 28 preliminary players he has called up,” he said.
According to the minister, the goalkeeping department is the most likely area from which the final cuts will be made.
“The cut of the Black Stars squad from 28 to 26 is likely to come from the goalkeeping unit. They will surely take a cut,” he added.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup will be hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico.
