DVLA Introduces Six Ghanaian Languages for Computer-Based Driving Tests

The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) has introduced six Ghanaian languages into its computer-based driving tests to help applicants who have difficulty reading or understanding English complete the mandatory licensing process.

Speaking on the initiative at the Accountability Series on Monday, October 12, 2026, DVLA Chief Executive Julius Neequaye Kotey explained that the new translation software would reduce language barriers and enable applicants to demonstrate their knowledge of road safety and traffic regulations.

“DVLA has introduced six local languages into its computer-based test platform to assist applicants who cannot read or write in English,” Mr Kotey said.

He added that the authority was working to increase the number of local languages available on the platform to make the testing process accessible to more applicants.

Beyond the language initiative, the DVLA has introduced an SMS notification system to remind licence holders about upcoming renewal and replacement dates. According to Mr Kotey, notifications are sent one month before a licence expires, with a second reminder issued two weeks before the expiry date.

Customers whose mobile numbers have not changed since their licence applications are expected to receive the reminders. The authority is also working to introduce a similar notification system for vehicle roadworthiness certificate renewals.

Mr Kotey further announced plans to establish an electronic library system at DVLA offices, where clients can watch refresher and road safety videos to improve their driving skills and knowledge.

He said work was also nearing completion on a queue management system for the authority’s offices. The system is expected to help reduce congestion and ensure that customers receive services within a reasonable time.

The measures form part of the DVLA’s efforts to improve accessibility, strengthen road safety education and make its services more efficient for motorists and other clients.
