Ghana to Introduce Performance Targets for Diplomats – Hon. Ablakwa.

Foreign Affairs Minister, Hon Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has disclosed that Ghanaian ambassadors and diplomats will soon be assessed based on clearly defined performance indicators, a move he describes as a first in the nation’s history.

Speaking at the 9th Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD-9), Mr. Ablakwa announced that the framework will officially be launched on September 1, 2025, by President John Dramani Mahama.

“On the 1st of September, the President will be launching the first of its kind, a novel KPI Key Performance Indicators for all ambassadors and diplomats from the Republic of Ghana. This has never happened in our history,” he stated.

According to the Minister, the new framework will place a strong emphasis on economic diplomacy, ensuring that Ghana’s foreign relations deliver tangible benefits back home. “When you peruse that document, you will see that economic diplomacy is at the heart of it,” he noted.

He further explained that the government’s vision is to make diplomacy more impactful and people-centered. “The President wants our diplomacy to make an impact. Our diplomacy must lead to improvement in the lives of the people. Diplomacy must promote investment. And diplomacy must create a haven for all of those who invest in our country,” Mr. Ablakwa emphasized.

The initiative, which the government describes as unprecedented, is expected to align Ghana’s foreign service with national development goals and ensure that the work of diplomats translates directly into economic growth, investment opportunities, and stronger international partnerships.
