The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has launched investigations into alleged electoral corruption during the New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential primaries held on 31 January 2026 and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary primaries at Ayawaso East on 7 February 2026.
According to the OSP, the investigations are centred on allegations of vote buying, vote selling, and the sources of funding behind the suspected corrupt practices in both internal party elections.
In a statement, the OSP disclosed that it commenced a real-time investigation into the NDC parliamentary primaries at Ayawaso East on 7 February 2026. During the exercise, events took a violent turn when an officer of the OSP was allegedly attacked while performing official duties.
The statement alleges that Mohammed Baba Jamal Ahmed, one of the candidates in the Ayawaso East contest, “abetted thugs to physically attack an officer of the OSP, who was serving an investigative directive on him in relation to vote buying and vote selling.”
As a result of the incident, the OSP says it has opened an additional investigation into the alleged assault of an authorised officer in the lawful performance of his functions, specifically in relation to Mr Ahmed.
The anti-corruption body used the opportunity to caution political actors and the general public against electoral malpractice, stressing that such actions carry serious legal consequences.
“The law prohibits corrupt acts in relation to public elections,” the OSP reminded, adding that “it is a serious offence to engage in vote buying, vote selling, intimidation, threats of violence, and acts of violence in relation to elections.”
