Ranking Member of Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee, Hon. Samuel Abu Jinapor, has reiterated the New Patriotic Party’s demand for the immediate resignation of Foreign Affairs Minister Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa over the government’s evacuation exercise in South Africa.
Speaking on Tuesday, 3 November 2026, during the NPP’s “Yɛ Gye Yɛ Sika” demonstration, Abu Jinapor insisted that the minister must account for public funds spent on the exercise.
The protesters, who made a stop at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs offices at Airport in Accra, maintained that the government must provide answers over what they described as outstanding financial accountability issues surrounding the evacuation.
“Public funds cannot be dealt with as if checking into a hotel and checking out,” Abu Jinapor told the demonstrators.
He explained that even hotels require customers to settle their bills before checking out, arguing that public officials must equally account for state resources entrusted to them.
The former Lands and Natural Resources Minister questioned the reported expenditure of GH¢49 million on the evacuation exercise, alongside an outstanding amount of more than GH¢16 million, which he said had not been properly accounted for.
“The minister must account for it. The government must account for it,” he declared, adding that the Minority in Parliament and the NPP’s youth wing were demanding accountability.
Abu Jinapor further called on President John Dramani Mahama to take action against Ablakwa, invoking Article 81 of the 1992 Constitution and the President’s own Code of Conduct for political appointees.
He warned that the Minority would take further action in Parliament if the minister failed to provide the necessary answers.
The “Yɛ Gye Yɛ Sika” demonstration, organised by the NPP, is part of the party’s campaign to demand accountability over the South Africa evacuation exercise and call for Ablakwa’s removal from office.
