Six Confirmed Dead as Stampede Erupts at El-Wak Stadium Military Recruitment

The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has confirmed the tragic death of six people following a stampede that occurred early Wednesday morning, November 12, 2025, at the El-Wak Sports Stadium in Accra.

According to a press release issued by the GAF, the unfortunate incident happened “before the commencement of the 2025/2026 recruitment exercise” when an unexpected crowd surge led to chaos at the entrance.

Preliminary investigations, the statement noted, revealed that the stampede was “triggered by an unexpected surge of applicants who breached security protocols and rushed into the gates ahead of scheduled screening at about 0620 hours.”

The Ghana Armed Forces described the incident as deeply regrettable, confirming that six potential recruits lost their lives while several others sustained injuries. Those injured are currently receiving emergency medical care at the 37 Military Hospital.

“The injured are currently receiving emergency medical care at the 37 Military Hospital. Ghana Armed Forces assures the general public that medical teams are working tirelessly to stabilise affected individuals,” the statement said.

The GAF further added that arrangements are underway to notify the families of the deceased and provide the necessary support during this difficult period.

“The Ghana Armed Forces extends its deepest condolences to the families of the deceased and wishes a swift recovery to those injured,” it added.

Authorities have assured that further updates on the situation and the continuation of the recruitment process will be communicated in due course.

The tragic incident has sparked sorrow and concern across the country, especially among families of young people who had gathered in hopes of joining the Ghana Armed Forces.
