Today, Thursday, May 1, the President of the Republic took to his official Facebook page to share a heartfelt message marking May Day, celebrating the hard work, resilience, and invaluable contributions of Ghanaian workers.
In his post, the President wished all workers a Happy May Day and reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to creating an enabling environment for decent work, fair wages, and sustainable development.
“On behalf of the people of Ghana, I celebrate your tireless efforts, dedication, and contributions to our progress as a country and people,” he wrote.
This year’s May Day celebration, held under the theme “Striving for peace and stability to drive industrialisation, trade, and decent work for social justice,” strongly resonated with the President. He described it as a timely reminder of the urgent need to implement sound policies that support job creation, economic stability, and workers’ welfare.
Highlighting the government’s ongoing efforts, the President shared that within the past four months, new policies have been rolled out to stabilise the economy and drive industrial growth. These include initiatives aimed at value addition in raw materials, the promotion of light industries, and the creation of jobs in manufacturing and trade.
He stressed that trade and economic partnerships are a major priority, noting, “We are working to strengthen our trade relationships, both regionally and internationally, to open new markets for Ghanaian goods and services.”
As part of his 120-day social contract with the people of Ghana, the President emphasized the importance of creating decent work opportunities. Recent programmes such as the National Apprenticeship Programme, Adwumawura, and One Million Coders are all geared toward empowering the youth and building a skilled workforce ready to meet the demands of a modern economy.
“You are the engine of our economy, the builders of our infrastructure, and the innovators who propel us forward,” the President stated, assuring workers of strengthened labour laws, improved occupational safety, and enhanced social dialogue mechanisms.
Acknowledging existing challenges like inflation, unemployment, and infrastructure deficits, the President maintained that his government remains focused on addressing these issues head-on. Investments in education, road networks, energy, and skills development are being prioritised to provide a stronger foundation for national growth.
In closing, the President called for unity between employers and employees, saying, “Let us all commit to fostering a spirit of collaboration, understanding, and mutual respect and work together to create a more prosperous and equitable Ghana.”
