A group of 118 New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidates from the 2024 general elections has publicly declared its support for Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia ahead of the party’s flagbearer election scheduled for January 31, 2026.
The endorsement was announced at a press conference held on Thursday, January 8, 2026, where the group explained that their decision followed a careful assessment of all individuals seeking to lead the party into the next electoral cycle. According to them, their support for Dr Bawumia is grounded in his experience, competence, leadership style, and clear vision for the future of the NPP.
Speaking on behalf of the group, former Member of Parliament for Sekondi, Andrew Egyapa Mercer, noted that the candidates had closely monitored the campaigns and track records of all the aspirants. He acknowledged the strengths of the other contenders, stating, “We have indeed followed the campaign of all these fine gentlemen of our party, some of whom have chalked immense successes in business, governance and in the policy space.”
However, Mr Egyapa Mercer stressed that when it comes to the qualities required to lead the party into the 2028 general elections, Dr Bawumia stands out clearly. He explained that after weighing key leadership parameters, the group reached a firm conclusion. “When all the key parameters required for leading our great party into 2028 are taken together, we are unconvinced, at this time, that any of them match up to the pedigree, experience, competence, vision, bold ideas, intellect, integrity, humility and compassion that Dr Bawumia embodies today,” he said.
The group emphasised that their endorsement was not driven by sentiment but by strategic thinking and a desire to see the NPP return to power in 2028. They believe Dr Bawumia possesses the depth, credibility, and national appeal necessary to unite the party and present a strong challenge in the next general election.
Concluding his remarks, Mr Egyapa Mercer made a strong case for Dr Bawumia’s readiness for the task ahead, declaring, “He simply is the most prepared, most formidable and winnable candidate for the 2028 General.”
The declaration by the 118 former parliamentary candidates adds to the growing internal support for Dr Bawumia as the NPP prepares for its crucial flagbearer contest on 31st January 2026
