President John Dramani Mahama has granted a presidential pardon to 863 convicted persons as part of activities marking Ghana’s 70th Independence Anniversary.
The decision was taken in accordance with Article 72(1) of the 1992 Constitution and following consultation with the Council of State.
A statement signed by the Minister for Government Communications and Spokesperson to the President, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, said the pardon was intended to mark the national milestone “with an act of mercy and national reflection.”
The largest group comprises 819 first offenders who have been granted outright release. The President has also granted outright release to 13 persons aged 70 years and above.
In addition, 11 persons serving death sentences will have their sentences commuted to life imprisonment, while others have been granted relief on grounds including serious illness, petitions and special recommendations.
The statement said the relevant state institutions have been directed to take the necessary steps to give effect to the President’s decision.
The presidential pardon forms part of the commemorative activities for Ghana’s 70th Independence Anniversary and reflects the constitutional powers vested in the President to exercise the prerogative of mercy.
