The Minister for Sports and Recreation, Hon. Kofi Adams, has expressed dissatisfaction with the performance of Black Stars coach, Otto Addo, despite Ghana’s recent win in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
In an interview, Mr. Adams said it would be misleading for anyone to suggest satisfaction with the coach’s work when Ghana’s qualification is not yet guaranteed.
“We are interested in what the coach does, his performance, and everything. As a ministry, not personally as a minister. But let me tell you that there are national teams that, after game eight, are very confident they are going to the World Cup. As I sit here, very soon AFCON will start in Morocco. Is Ghana going to be there? No,” he stressed.
Mr. Adams explained that Ghana is still walking a fine line in the qualifiers and, therefore, he cannot describe the coach’s performance as impressive.
“We have not qualified for the World Cup yet. We still need a win and a minimum draw to comfortably say that, as far as our group is concerned, nobody can overtake us, even if they score a thousand goals. So, we are not sitting in a comfortable space at all. If I tell you that I am impressed, then it means that I don’t know my job. I am not. There is a lot of room for improvement,” he said.
The Minister added that even Otto Addo himself admits to shortcomings after matches, a sign that the technical bench still has significant work to do.
“When you meet the coach himself, he tells you that he feels he got this one, not this. He takes the blame for this, he takes the blame for that. He identifies this. But people may ask, for how long will you continue to be doing post-factual rationalisation? For how long?” Mr. Adams asked.
Describing his own experience during Ghana’s last match, the Minister admitted he was uneasy throughout.
“The last game like this was very hot. I have to be getting up I got up like three times,” he recounted.
Mr. Adams’ remarks reflect growing public debate over Otto Addo’s tenure, with many fans split between praising the team’s fighting spirit and criticizing the lack of consistency in performance.
