Sports Minister Advocates for Comfortable Travel for Black Stars Players

The Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, has emphasized that Black Stars players should not be made to travel in economy class, stressing the need for comfort to ensure optimal performance.

His statement comes in response to President John Mahama’s directive, which instructs newly appointed ministers to refrain from first-class travel as part of efforts to reduce public expenditure and promote modest leadership.

Speaking on TV3’s Sports Station, Adams acknowledged the broad applicability of the directive but insisted that national team players require better travel conditions.

The President’s directive applies across all sectors, including the Football Association (FA), unless we are chartering a flight, which usually does not have a first-class option. However, you cannot place players in economy class because they rely on their legs for performance and need enough space to stretch. You don’t expect them to be squeezed into economy class and still perform at their best. For short flights, like those from Accra to Kumasi, it is manageable, but for longer journeys, at least business class is necessary,” he stated.

The Black Stars have begun preparations for their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, with nine players participating in their first training session on Monday
