NDC Has Not Changed Any Tax Apart from the E-Levy – Minority Leader

The Minority Leader and Member of Parliament for Effutu Constituency has criticized the NDC government, accusing it of failing to provide meaningful tax relief to Ghanaians despite numerous promises made while in opposition.

Speaking at the NPP’s press briefing on Thursday, May 1, the Minority Leader noted that the only tax the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government has adjusted since taking office is the controversial Electronic Levy (E-Levy).

“When we were in opposition, the NDC constantly complained about the excessive tax burdening the Ghanaian businessman,” he said. “But look at what we are witnessing today, apart from the E-Levy, all the taxes Ghanaians have been paying remain unchanged, including port charges.”

He went on to stress that these burdensome taxes have not only remained but in some cases worsened. “They haven’t changed anything. I’m here to tell you that the VAT structure remains the same. Taxes on mining companies have even been increased,” he said, adding that the government justified these increases on the basis that such companies are making profits.

The Minority Leader emphasized the increasing utility costs, especially for electricity, noting that the average Ghanaian is facing higher payments. “Consider the electricity tariffs ,we are now paying more than we did before. They initially started at a certain level, but the situation has worsened. To add to the problem, dumsor has returned,” he stated.

His comments reflect growing concerns over the government’s economic policies, especially as Ghanaians continue to grapple with a high cost of living and a resurgence of power instability.
