The political climate in the Northern Region is poised for further intense activity, as the Kpandai parliamentary seat has been officially declared vacant. Parliament has formally notified the Electoral Commission (EC) to start preparations for a by-election, following a court directive for a re-run of the 2024 parliamentary contest in the constituency.
In a letter dated 4th December 2025, the Parliamentary Service confirmed that the vacancy had been triggered by a High Court ruling from Tamale, which ordered a fresh election after months of legal dispute. The notification marks the start of the formal administrative process required for the EC to set a date for the re-run.
Quoting the Clerk to Parliament, Ebenezer Ahumah Djietror, the letter stated: “In exercise of the power conferred and the duty imposed on the Clerk to Parliament by Article 112(5), as amended, of the 1992 Constitution of the Republic of Ghana, I DO HEREBY FORMALLY NOTIFY you of the occurrence of a vacancy in the membership of Parliament, occasioned by the Order of the High Court, Tamale, for a rerun of the Kpandai Parliamentary Elections, given on the 24th day of November, 2025.”
This action follows the service of the court order on Parliament, where the Clerk was listed as the 4th Respondent in the case with Suit Number NR/TL/HC/E13/22/25. The High Court ruling nullified the earlier declared results and called for a new contest to determine who rightfully occupies the Kpandai seat.
With the official notice now sent to the Electoral Commission, the stage is set for the next constitutional steps the scheduling of a by-election that is expected to draw significant national attention, considering the competitive nature of the original 2024 race.
Political parties, candidates, and supporters in Kpandai are now bracing themselves for what is expected to be another closely fought electoral battle. The EC is yet to announce the date for the re-run, but the legal and administrative framework for the process has now been activated.
