Asante Akyem North MP Detained at Amsterdam Airport — Parliament of Ghana Confirms

Parliament has confirmed the detention of the Member of Parliament for Asante Akyem North Constituency, Hon Kwame Ohene Frimpong, at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam, Netherlands.

The development was disclosed in an official statement issued by the Clerk to Parliament on Tuesday, May 12, Ebenezer Ahumah Djietror, who noted that the leadership of the House is currently engaging Ghana’s diplomatic mission in The Hague to gather detailed information about the incident.

According to the statement, Parliament had formally been notified of the MP’s detention at the Dutch airport, prompting immediate attention from the Speaker and parliamentary leadership.

“It has come to the attention of Parliament that the Hon Member for Asante Akyem North Constituency, Mr Kwame Ohene Frimpong, has been detained at the Schiphol Airport, Amsterdam in the Netherlands,”  the statement read.

The statement further indicated that efforts are underway to establish the full circumstances surrounding the matter.

“The Rt Hon Speaker and the Leadership of the House are in touch with Ghana’s Mission in The Hague for detailed information on the matter,” the statement added.

Parliament also assured the public that further updates would be provided once more information becomes available.

“The public will be duly informed appropriately on this matter.”

The reasons for the detention have not yet been disclosed, and authorities in the Netherlands have not yet publicly commented on the situation.
