Otumfuo destools Kenyase No. 2 Paramount Chief after 89-year reign over breaches of Asante customs

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has destooled Nana Kwabena Nsia Ababio, the Kenyase No. 2 Manhene, for violating Asante customs and traditions.

The decision, which brings an end to Nana Kwabena Nsia Ababio’s 89-year reign, was announced during an Asanteman Traditional Council meeting held on Monday, July 27, 2026. The chief was enstooled in 1937, making his tenure one of the longest in Asanteman’s history.

Nana Kwabena Nsia Ababio was removed from the stool after the Asanteman Traditional Council found that he had breached traditional norms and obligations expected of a Paramount Chief.

The destoolment also affected nearly all his kingmakers, who were found to have violated their oaths of office and responsibilities within the traditional council.

However, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II spared the Kontihene from the sanctions and reinstated the destooled Akyeame and other linguists of the traditional council, allowing them to continue serving in their respective roles.

The decision reflects the Asantehene’s continued efforts to enforce discipline, uphold Asante customs and preserve the integrity of traditional leadership within Asanteman.
