Friday, July 4, Declared Public Holiday for Republic Day Observance.

The Government of Ghana has officially declared Friday, July 4, 2025, as a public holiday to mark the celebration of Republic Day across the country. This was announced in a press release signed by Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, Minister for Interior.

According to the statement, Tuesday, July 1, 2025, remains Ghana’s Republic Day, a significant day in the nation’s history that commemorates the country’s full transition to a republic in 1960. However, His Excellency the President of the Republic of Ghana, acting under the authority of Section 2 of the Public Holidays and Commemorative Days Act, 2021 (Act 601), has issued an Executive Instrument (E.I.) to declare Friday, July 4, as an additional public holiday.

The press release emphasized that Friday, July 4, should be observed as a public holiday throughout the country. This decision is intended to provide Ghanaians with the opportunity to meaningfully commemorate Republic Day and to promote national reflection and unity.

Republic Day is a day of great importance in Ghana’s political history. It marks the moment when Ghana became fully sovereign, moving from a constitutional monarchy under the British crown to a republic with a Ghanaian president as Head of State. It is a time to reflect on the country’s democratic journey, celebrate national achievements, and renew the collective commitment to nation-building.
